Acknowledgments

Writing a book requires an intense effort. We would like to acknowledge the support of everyone who helped us in writing this book, without which we would never have been able to complete it.

The following people spent countless hours reviewing the material in this book and providing invaluable feedback: Julia Allen, Rich Caralli, Jeff Collmann, Carol A. Sledge, Andrew Moore, William Wilson, and Carol Woody.

We would especially like to thank Rich Pethia, program manager of the Networked Systems Survivability Program, and William Wilson, technical manager of the Survivable Enterprise Management Team, for their encouragement and support of our work. Such an ambitious project requires unwavering support from management, and we are grateful for their help.

Many people made contributions to the technical content of this book. Specifically, Julia Allen helped us develop the catalog of practices, Rich Caralli contributed lessons learned from his experiences with OCTAVE, Jeff Collmann offered insightful and detailed comments on our early prototypes, and Bradford Willke made important contributions to the technological pieces of OCTAVE.

We would also like to acknowledge those who have provided us with production assistance. Linda Pesante helped design the book and served as our technical editor, and David Biber created many of the graphics used throughout the book.

The technical content of this book evolved from many previous efforts within the Software Engineering Institute. We leveraged technical material from several projects, including Continuous Risk Management, Software Risk Evaluation, Information Security Evaluation, and the early work on the OCTAVE framework. Many people contributed to these projects, and we would like to thank all of them for providing such a rich foundation upon which to build.

We would also like to acknowledge all the organizations that provided funding and pilot opportunities as we developed the OCTAVE Method.

Finally, Chris would like to thank his wife, Carol Feola, for her support and encouragement. To put up with the frustrations, deadlines, and last-minute reviews required incredible generosity and patience.
